Abstract

Rainfed lowland rice fields are an agricultural system that relies heavily on rainfall as the primary source of water supply. Uncertainty in rainfall patterns due to climate change has caused water availability to become increasingly unstable, potentially reducing rice productivity. Air Itam Village, Penukal District, Penukal Abab Lematang Ilir Regency, is an agricultural area dominated by rainfed rice fields covering approximately 95 ha; therefore, an analysis of water availability is required to assess the capability of rainfall to meet crop water requirements. This study aims to analyze water availability and water requirements in rainfed rice fields and to evaluate the water balance of agricultural land in Air Itam Village. The research method employed was a water balance analysis. The data used consisted of rainfall and climatological data from the last five years obtained from the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG), as well as land area and planting schedule data collected through field surveys. Evapotranspiration was calculated using the Modified Penman method, while effective rainfall was determined using the Basic Year method for rice and secondary crops. The results indicate that rainfall availability in Air Itam Village during the rice-growing season is generally sufficient to meet crop water requirements during certain periods, particularly in months with high rainfall. However, during periods of low rainfall, water deficits occur and may inhibit crop growth. Therefore, appropriate cropping pattern planning and proper water management are essential to improve water use efficiency and ensure the sustainability of rainfed rice production.
