Abstract

FREN SATRIA DEWANTARA. Characteristics of Sumatran Elephants (Elephas maximus sumatranus) Temminck 1849. in the Elephant Training Center in Lahat Regency, South Sumatra Province (Guided by ASVIC HELIDA and YULI ROSIANTY). This mission is determined to ensure the sustainability of forest benefits and functions in supporting national development.Basically, elephants are very selective in choosing their habitat, because elephants are one of the animals that have sensitivity. Ecological knowledge about how elephants use habitats and resources is still very limited. In fulfilling food needs and avoiding the sun's heat elephants always consider the optimal location of foraging, which is to spend time in primary forest (protected) during the day and out into the forest openings (secondary forest) when the sun's heat has decreased to meet their daily needs (Soeriatmadja , 1982: 4). The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics of Sumatera Elephant habitat (Elephas maximus sumatranus) in the elephant training center in Lahat District and to find out the habitat types that exist in the Lahat District elephant training center area. This research is expected to provide information about habitat characteristics. Sumatera elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) in the elephant breeding center in Lahat District, and what are the types of habitats in the Lahat District elephant training center.The type of method used in this study is the Sampling method where the observer collects data and observes habitat characteristics and habitat types in the Lahat District Elephant Breeding Center. The results of this study indicate that Sumatran Elephant Habitat in the Lahat Regency Elephant Training Center Area consists of hilly forests and sub-mountain forests that have the same function namely as providers of vegetation, shade, and water.
