Abstract

This study analyzes the pump capability of the Wastewater Pumping Station (WWPS) at Monpera in discharging domestic wastewater to the Sungai Selayur Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Palembang City. The research is motivated by the increasing volume of wastewater resulting from urban growth, making the pump’s capability to convey wastewater optimally an important issue to examine. Data were collected through field observations and interviews (primary data), as well as SCADA operational data from the Monpera WWPS (secondary data) over a 28day observation period (1–28 February 2026). The analysis covered pump operating time, pumped discharge, flow velocity, and daily wastewater volume, calculated directly from flow meter and totalizer readings. The results show that the average actual pump discharge was 0.163 m³/s, or about 54% of the pump’s design capacity (±0.3 m³/s) and 82% of the operational target discharge (0.2 m³/s), as the pump was operated at a fixed frequency of 40 Hz. The average daily pump operating time was 3 hours 29 minutes, with an average daily wastewater volume of 2,025.8 m³. This condition also resulted in a low average flow velocity of 0.208 m/s, remaining below the minimum self-cleansing velocity of 0.6 m/s on all 28 observed days. Overall, the existing pipeline network still has sufficient capacity to convey the entire volume of wastewater generated, indicating that the main limiting factor lies in the pump’s actual capability, which has not yet operated optimally. Optimization of the pump’s working frequency, together with routine pipeline maintenance, is needed to improve the performance of the pumping system.
