Abstract
This study aims to determine the characteristics of peat soil based on soil physical properties and to determine the shear strength parameters of peat soil using Triaxial CU (Consolidated Undrained) and Direct Shear tests. The research method involved collecting peat soil samples on Jalan Sarjana Timbangan Indralaya and then conducting tests at the Soil Mechanics Laboratory of Muhammadiyah University of Palembang. The tests included soil physical properties such as water content, specific gravity, ash content, fiber content, and bulk density, as well as mechanical properties using Triaxial CU and Direct Shear tests. The results showed that the peat soil at the study site has a very high water content, a large void ratio, and a relatively low specific gravity, thus categorizing it as a high-fibric peat soil. Based on the results of the soil shear strength tests, the internal friction angle obtained for the Triaxial CU test was 8.6° with a cohesion value of 0.645, while the Direct Shear test obtained an internal friction angle of 12.7° with a cohesion value of 0.0243. The differences in shear strength parameter values are influenced by differences in testing principles, loading conditions, and soil failure mechanisms used in each test method. Based on the analysis of the relationship between the internal friction angle and cohesion using the two test methods, a linear relationship was obtained with the regression equation y = 0.1514x – 1.2777 with a coefficient of determination R² = 1, indicating a very strong relationship between the two soil shear strength parameters. The results of this study are expected to serve as a reference in the planning and management of construction on peat soils, especially in areas with similar soil conditions.
