Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of adding Red Brick Powder (Serbuk Bata Merah/SBM) and Coconut Shell Ash (Abu Batok Kelapa/ABK) on improving the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of clay soil. The variations used include SBM at 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25%, combined with 10% ABK, with curing periods of 0, 5, and 10 days. The results show that the addition of SBM and ABK significantly improves the physical properties of the clay soil, as indicated by reduced water content, lower liquid and plastic limits, and increased specific gravity and dry density. The UCS test results demonstrate a substantial increase in soil strength. The original clay soil had a UCS value of 1.125 kg/cm², while the optimum mixture of 20% SBM + 10% ABK with 10 days of curing produced a UCS value of 3.278 kg/cm², nearly three times higher. This improvement is attributed to pozzolanic reactions between silica– alumina in SBM and ABK with calcium in the soil, forming strong C–S–H bonds that enhance soil cohesion and stability. Overall, SBM and ABK are proven to be effective, economical, and environmentally friendly stabilizing materials for improving the engineering properties of clay soil, especially for road and foundation applications
