Abstract
Portland cement remains the primary binding material in construction; however, its production process generates significant CO₂ emissions, necessitating the development of more environmentally friendly alternatives. One promising material is fly ash–based geopolymer activated with alkaline solutions. This study aims to investigate the impact of varying molarities of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and potassium hydroxide (KOH) on the density and compressive strength of geopolymer mortar. The molarity variations applied were 10M, 12M, 14M, and 16M, with combinations of alkaline solutions (NaOH+Na₂SiO₃ and KOH+Na₂SiO₃) at a ratio of 2.5:1. The alkaline solution-to-precursor ratio was fixed at 0.5, with a fine aggregate-to-fly ash ratio of 2, and the addition of 2% superplasticizer by precursor weight. The curing method was conducted in an oven at 60°C for 24 hours. Specific gravity and compressive strength tests were conducted at 14 and 28 days using cube specimens measuring 50 mm × 50 mm × 50 mm. The results indicate that mortars activated with NaOH performed better than those with KOH, with the optimum results obtained at 14M concentration, yielding a density of 2248.4 kg/m³ and a compressive strength of 46.76 MPa at 28 days. Meanwhile, KOH at the same concentration produced a maximum compressive strength of 43.63 MPa and a density of 2211.2 kg/m³. It is concluded that the variation in alkali molarity significantly influences the mechanical properties of geopolymer mortar, where higher Specific gravity corresponds to higher compressive strength.
