Abstract

Solar Power Plants (SPP) represent a promising renewable energy solution in Indonesia however, their operation is often affected by power quality problems caused by nonlinear loads that generate harmonics. Harmonic distortion in current and voltage can lead to waveform distortion, increased power losses, excessive heating of electrical equipment, reduced system efficiency, and decreased reliability. This study aims to analyze the impact of harmonics on a 2660 Wp Solar Power Plant system supplying nonlinear loads and to evaluate the effectiveness of passive filters in mitigating harmonic distortion. The research was conducted at the Electrical Engineering Laboratory of Universitas Muhammadiyah Palembang and in Rantau Dedap Village, Muara Enim Regency, South Sumatra, using direct measurements of voltage, current, frequency, and Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) under nonlinear load variations of 640 W, 350 W, and 200 W. The measurement results indicate that before the installation of the passive filter, the voltage THD values were 15.21% for the 640 W load, 15.20% for the 350 W load, and 15.15% for the 200 W load, while the current THD values were 1.66%, 1.28%, and 0.76%, respectively. After the implementation of the passive filter, the voltage THD significantly decreased to 6.08% for the 640 W and 350 W loads and to 6.06% for the 200 W load, whereas the current THD was reduced to 0.83%, 0.64%, and 0.38%, respectively. In addition, the system frequency, which previously fluctuated with an average value of 33.3 Hz under the 200 W load, was successfully stabilized at the nominal value of 50 Hz after the passive filter was applied. These results demonstrate that the application of passive filters in a 2660 Wp Solar Power Plant system is effective in reducing harmonic distortion, lowering THD levels, and improving overall power quality, thereby enhancing system stability, reliability, and long-term operational safety.
