Abstract

Coal mining activities not only produce coal as the primary product but also generate waste in the form of overburden or disposal material, which requires proper management. This disposal material is often piled in the area around the mine without adequate compaction. This practice can increase the risk of slope instability, which can lead to landslides. In the West Merapi sub-district of Lahat Regency, the Kungkilan River flows, part of which has undergone diversion. This river channel alteration activity triggered a landslide due to uncompacted dumped soil. The main focus of this study was to determine the slope safety factor (FSa) using the numerical software Plaxis 2D and to provide a landslide mitigation plan through slope reinforcement. From the calculation results using the Plaxis 2D program before slope treatment, the safety factor was obtained at 1.186, which is smaller than the slope safety factor value recommended by SNI-8460, which is 1.5. Two reinforcement variations were analyzed, namely: the first variation with 4 x 15 m geotubes, anchor gabions, and compacted embankment; and the second variation with galvanized wire gabions, anchor gabions, and compacted embankment. The analysis results showed that the first variation had a safety factor of 1.587 and the second variation was 1.582. All variations showed the slope safety factor value recommended by SNI-8460, which is 1.5, which means the slope is in a stable condition. Based on the analysis results of the two treatment variations, it can be concluded that the use of reinforcement materials such as gabions and geotubes can increase slope stability.
