Abstract
he rapid growth of the construction industry in Indonesia has driven the development of building materials that are not only efficient and high in quality but also environmentally friendly. One of the essential materials in construction is mortar, which traditionally relies on cement as its main binder. However, cement production contributes significantly to carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions, prompting the need for more sustainable alternatives. One such alternative is geopolymer mortar, which utilizes fly ash as the primary material and an alkaline activator solution composed of sodium silicate (Na₂SiO₃) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). This study aims to investigate the effect of varying the ratio of Na₂SiO₃ to NaOH on the compressive strength and density of geopolymer mortar. Fly ash is used as the main binder, and different Na₂SiO₃:NaOH ratios are tested to determine the optimal mix. Tests were conducted to evaluate both density and compressive strength at 28 days of age. The results show that a Na₂SiO₃:NaOH ratio of 2.5:1 yields the best performance, producing the highest density and the maximum compressive strength of 48.75 MPa at 28 days. Meanwhile, at a 3:1 ratio, both density and compressive strength decreased, with a compressive strength of 38.63 MPa, likely due to excessive silica accumulation that interferes with the geopolymerization process. Therefore, a 2.5:1 ratio is recommended as the most effective composition for producing geopolymer mortar.
