Abstract

Expansive soil is a type of soil that is prone to shrinkage and expansion. It expands significantly upon water absorption during the rainy season, and cracks (shrinkage) during the dry season. It is classified as a soil with very high plasticity. This study aims to determine the effect of adding quicklime on increasing the unconfined compressive strength of expansive soil from Rantau Panjang Village, Buay Rawan District, South Ogan Komering Ulu Regency. Laboratory tests were conducted with varying quicklime mixtures of 0%, 16%, 17%, and 24%. Samples were cured for 0, 6, and 9 days. The test results showed that the unconfined compressive strength increased with increasing cement content and curing time. The original soil yielded a 9-day curing time of only 0,75495 kg/cm²/kPa. With the addition of 24% quicklime with the same curing time, the unconfined compressive strength increased to 2,75816 kg/cm², or more than 265, 343% compared to the original soil. These results indicate that the quicklime combination is quite effective in increasing the stability of expansive soils and can be an alternative solution for subgrade improvement in road construction or other infrastructure in areas with similar soil condition.
