Abstract

This research aims to examine the potential use of polypropylene (PP) plastic waste as an alternative to natural coarse aggregate in concrete mixtures. The background of the study is based on growing environmental concerns due to increasing plastic waste and the high exploitation of natural resources such as crushed stone, which is a main component in concrete. PP plastic was selected due to its lightweight, strength, chemical resistance, and recyclability, making it a promising material for environmentally friendly construction. The method used involves partially replacing natural coarse aggregate with PP plastic at varying proportions of 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5% of the total weight of the coarse aggregate. The test specimens were cylindrical in shape with dimensions of 15x30 cm, and compressive strength testing was conducted at 28 days of curing. The primary objective was to determine how PP plastic affects the compressive strength of concrete and to identify the optimal substitution level. The results showed that the use of PP plastic led to a reduction in concrete compressive strength. According to PBI 1971 Chapter 4 Article 8 Paragraph 1, if the test results yield at least 80% of the required concrete strength, the structure is deemed acceptable. Therefore, a strength reduction of up to 20% is still tolerated. Normal concrete (0% PP) achieved a compressive strength of 25.06 MPa, while concrete with 2% PP reached 21.31 MPa, and the lowest compressive strength recorded was 20.782 MPa, indicating a maximum reduction of 2%. Keywords : PP plastic, Polypropylene, concrete, compressive strength.
