Abstract

Islami, M.P. 2025. Culture Shock Experienced by Sudanese Students Learning at Universitas Muhammadiyah Ahmad Dahlan Palembang. Thesis, English Education Study Program, Sarjana Degree (S1), Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Universitas Muhammadiyah Palembang. Advisor (1) Hj. Asti Gumartifa, S.Pd., M.Pd. (2) Sherly Marliasari, S.Pd., M.Pd. This study explored the culture shock experienced by Sudanese students studying at Universitas Muhammadiyah Ahmad Dahlan Palembang. The research focused on both the psychological and sociocultural challenges faced by these students and the strategies they used to adapt a new cultural environment. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through questionnaires and unstructured interviews, which allowed for a deeper exploration of students’ perspectives. The findings indicated that Sudanese students went through the four stages of culture shock: honeymoon, crisis, recovery, and adjustment. During the crisis stage, students reported difficulties related to language barriers, food, climate differences, and communication patterns with local students. However, in the recovery and adjustment stages, students gradually were adapted by building social networks, improving language skills, and engaging in local cultural practices. In conclusion, culture shock was an inevitable experience for Sudanese students in Palembang, but it could be managed through resilience, social support, and active participation in the local community. This research contributed to a better understanding of international students’ adaptation processes and provided practical insights for universities in supporting foreign students.
