Abstract

ABSTRACT This research was conducted to analyze the water needs, water availability, and irrigation channel efficiency on rice fields in Perigi Village, Kayu Agung District, Ogan Komering Ilir Regency. The area of the rice fields studied is 82 hectares with a rice-rice planting pattern. The planting season I takes place from March to July, while planting season II is from July to November. From December to February, the land is left fallow. The calculation results show that the average water requirement during the first planting season is 0.076 m³/second, while the water availability is only 0.049 m³/second. During the second planting season, the water requirement increases to 0.117 m³/second, but the water availability decreases to 0.031 m³/second. Water shortages occur in most months of planting, especially during the dry season. The efficiency of the irrigation channels, particularly in Tertiary Channel III, only reaches 70.09%, which is still below the minimum standard of 80% for tertiary channels. This low efficiency is caused by sediment deposition and the growth of wild plants in the channels. To improve water distribution efficiency, the construction of permanent irrigation channels and regular maintenance are recommended. Effective cropping schedule management and active involvement of farmers and relevant institutions are also essential to support the sustainability of irrigation systems in tidal farming areas
