Abstract

Clay soil is known for its high plasticity, high water absorption capacity, and tendency to undergo significant volume changes due to fluctuations in moisture content. These characteristics make clay soil less stable and unsuitable as a subgrade material, especially for infrastructure such as roads and building foundations. This condition presents a particular challenge in areas like Marga Baru Village, Muara Lakitan Subdistrict, Musi Rawas Regency, where such soil types are commonly found. Therefore, efforts are needed to improve the physical and mechanical properties of clay soil to ensure safer and more reliable use as a construction subgrade. This study was conducted to examine the effect of adding Portland cement and gypsum powder on the improvement of unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of clay soil. Laboratory tests were carried out with variations of Portland cement content at 0%, 3%, 6%, and 9%, along with the addition of 5% gypsum powder in each mixture. Samples were then tested at three different curing periods: 0 days, 6 days, and 9 days. The entire process aimed to determine the extent to which the soil strength increased as a result of the added stabilizing materials. he results of the study show that the combination of Portland cement and gypsum powder significantly increases the unconfined compressive strength of clay soil. The original untreated soil had a compressive strength of 0.33324 kg/cm2. With the addition of 9% cement and 5% gypsum without curing, the strength increased to 0.76954 kg/cm2, representing a 130.96% increase. After 9 days of curing, the compressive strength reached 2.76931 kg/cm2, which is an increase of more than 259.865% compared to the original soil. Therefore, the addition of Portland cement and gypsum powder is proven to be effective as a clay soil stabilization solution and can be applied as a ground improvement method in construction projects located in areas with similar soil conditions.. Keywords: clay soil, soil stabilization, Portland cement, gypsum, unconfined compressive strength.
