Abstract

The objective of this study is to determine whether story-based learning strategy was effective in Teaching Speaking Skill to Eighth-Grade Students of SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Palembang. This study employed a quasiexperimental method. The population of this study consists of all students of SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Palembang, totaling 116 students from 3 classes, while the sample of this study was students of class VIII 2 and VIII 3, totaling 78 students. The sample was obtained through purposive sampling. The test consisted of a single story. The data collected were analyzed using the t-test with SPSS 25.00. In the control group, the highest post-test score was 85, while the lowest score was 55. In the experimental group, the highest post-test score was 90, while the lowest score was 62. The results of the data analysis showed that the t-value was 6.505, exceeding the critical value of 0.2619 at a 5% ignificance level with 76 degrees of freedom. Since the t-value surpassed the critical value, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that Teaching Speaking Skill using Storytelling is effective for Eighth Grade Students of SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Palembang
