Abstract

This study aims to compare the flexural strength of concrete reinforced with steel and bamboo as an alternative environmentally friendly reinforcement material. Concrete is known for its compressive strength but lacks tensile strength, hence the need for reinforcement. Steel is commonly used due to its high tensile strength, but it is expensive and environmentally unfriendly. Petung bamboo was selected in this research for its high tensile capacity and renewability. The methodology involved experimental testing in a laboratory using concrete beam specimens with dimensions of 15×15×50 cm. The bamboo reinforcements were varied in diameter: 8 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm, and 16 mm. Each variation consisted of three samples, and testing was conducted at 28 days of curing. The results showed that Ø 8mm iron reinforcement concrete had the highest flexural strength value of 11.489 MPa, while the flexural strength for Ø 8mm bamboo reinforcement was 4.364 MPa equivalent to 37.9%, Ø 10mm bamboo was 5.268 MPa equivalent to 45.7%, Ø 12mm bamboo was 5.542 MPa equivalent to 48.2%, and Ø 16mm bamboo was 6.906 MPa equivalent to 60.1% of Ø 8mm iron reinforced concrete.
