Abstract

ABSTRACT Oktaviani Tiyah. 2021. Teaching Speaking By Using Demonstration Method to Improve Students’ Ability in Procedure Text to the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 1 Sungai Rotan. Thesis, English Education Study Program, Sarjana Degree (S1), Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Muhammadiyah Palembang. Advisor (I) Sherly Marliasari, S.Pd., M.Pd, and advisor (II) Dr. Sri Hartati, M.Pd. Keywords: Demonstration, Procedure Text and Speaking Skill. This title of thesis was “Teaching Speaking By Using Demonstration Method to Improve Students’ Ability in Procedure Text to the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 1 Sungai Rotan”. The limitation of the problem limited on “Teaching Speaking By Using Demonstration Method to Improve Students’ Ability in Procedure Text to the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 1 Sungai Rotan”. The formulation of the problem “Is there any significant effect of Using Demonstration Method Procedure Text in Teaching Speaking to the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 1 Sungai Rotan?”. The objective of this study was “To find out whether there is any significant effect on the improvement of students’ speaking ability after being taught by using demonstration method and without demonstration method”. The population of this study was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Sungai Rotan in the academic years 2021/2022 with the total 58 students as the samples, which were divided into two groups, they were experimental group and control group. The data were collected through test, pretest and post-test. The data were analyzed by using SPSS 22. The result of the experimental group showed that t-obtained was 17.444, which was at the 0.05 of level significance with degree of freedom (df) was 28 with the critical value 2.0484. Therefore it could be concluded that alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected, because t-obtained exceeded and higher than t-table p (.000) was less of lower than ɑ (0.05). It means that there was significant difference between the students’ scores in the pre-test and post-test, the scores improved highly. It meant that teaching speaking skills of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Sungai Rotan by using demonstration method was effective.
