Abstract

To improve the quality of asphalt can be done by adding additives, such as Polyehtylene (LDPE, HDPE, PET, etc.) or rubber which is indicated by an increase in Marshall stability value. The government through the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) is developing a technology for mixing asphalt plastic or rubber which is applied in several roads in Indonesia as an effort to utilize plastic waste. The method used in this research is an experimental study conducted with HDPE plastic content used was 5%, 6% and 7% Marshall tests were carried out to determine the value of stability and flow. This study aims to determine the effect of adding HDPE plastic to the characteristics of the AC-WC asphalt mixture and to bitumen properties. The test results obtained indicate the addition of HDPE plastic can improve the performance of asphalt mixtures, this can be seen from an increase in Marshall stability compared to without the addition of HDPE plastic. Similarly, the VIM and VMA values increase, this shows the cavities in the mixture and the space between the aggregates getting bigger, so that the asphalt can fill the empty space and bind the aggregate. The addition of HDPE plastic with 5% content showed optimum quality seen from Marshall testing parameters.
