Abstract
The 5GTA11 traction alternator on locomotive CC 206 09 44 converts mechanical energy from the diesel engine into electrical energy that supplies the traction motor, and its DC output voltage depends heavily on the excitation current applied at each notch position. Measured field data describing this relationship under actual operating conditions have so far been limited, leaving depot technicians without an adequate reference to objectively assess the alternator's excitation performance. This study aims to analyze the effect of excitation current variation on the DC output voltage of a 5GTA11 traction alternator in locomotive CC 206 09 44 based on notch variations from notch 1 to notch 8 using the Self Load Test method. The test was conducted at the Locomotive Depot by measuring excitation current, alternator DC output voltage, engine speed (RPM), and load current at each notch position. The test data were analyzed using a quantitative descriptive approach based on measurement tables and graphs. The results show that increasing the notch position was followed by an increase in all alternator operating parameters. The excitation current increased from 0.46 A to 0.92 A, the DC output voltage increased from 115 V to 786 V, the engine speed increased from 450 rpm to 1,051 rpm, and the load current increased from 306 A to 1,897 A. At notches 5–7, the engine speed remained constant at 964 rpm, while the DC output voltage increased from 493 V to 643 V as the excitation current increased from 0.74 A to 0.88 A. This condition indicates that the voltage variation in this range was more influenced by the excitation current than by engine speed. Increasing the excitation current strengthened the rotor magnetic field, resulting in a higher induced voltage in the alternator.
