Abstract

This research is motivated by the fact that the batik industry in Palembang holds great potential but is often hindered by a lack of information and collaboration. First, limited understanding of market trends can result in products that do not meet consumer needs. Second, community involvement in batik marketing remains very low. Without synergy among artisans, local communities, and other stakeholders, efforts to enhance the market value of batik will be impeded. This study aims to understand the efforts to enhance the quality and market value of Palembang batik production, as well as the factors influencing these aspects. It also seeks to understand the consequences of such enhancements for Palembang batik entrepreneurs. A qualitative research approach is employed, utilizing data collection methods that include observation, interviews, and documentation, to examine the efforts to improve quality and market value and to identify the factors affecting the product quality and market value of Palembang batik. The study finds that efforts to enhance the quality and market value of batik products at Toko Kasih Ibu (Living Plaza Palembang) are achieved through a combination of market research and product testing; the implementation of production standards (SOPs) and internal quality control (QC teams); periodic workforce training; the selection of high-quality materials and appropriate dyeing/finishing techniques; the provision of varied sizes and care instructions; and inclusive marketing strategies (covering design, color variety, promotion, and aesthetic packaging). This holistic approach aims to ensure comfort, durability, consistent quality, and a product presentation that boosts marketability. Factors influencing quality and market value include internal elements—such as production SOPs, QC teams, workforce training, raw material selection, dyeing/finishing techniques, and care information—and external elements, such as demand forecasting based on sales data and seasonal trends, market competition (discounts/new models), the role of packaging and brand image, social recommendations and media influence, and the absence of external certification, which may limit access to specific market segments. The consequences of enhancing quality and market value for the Toko Kasih Ibu business owner include: operational requirements for documentation, monitoring, resource management, and workforce scheduling to align with production needs; production improvements—specifically defect reduction through training, calibration, and process control—despite potential waste arising from technical constraints; marketing and business benefits, such as improved value perception, increased sales opportunities, and higher customer loyalty; and strategic considerations regarding external certification or laboratory testing to expand market access and substantiate quality claims, while balancing efficiency and managing additional costs.
