Abstract

ABSTRACK Underground gas distribution pipelines are at risk of corrosion due to soil environmental conditions, which can affect the reliability and service life of the pipelines. To reduce this risk, PT Perta-Samtan Gas Sei Gerong, South Sumatra, uses an Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) system as a cathodic protection method. This study aims to analyze the performance and effectiveness of the ICCP system in protecting underground gas distribution pipelines. The testing was conducted by measuring soil resistivity, rectifier output voltage and current, and Pipe-to-Soil Potential (PSP) at measurement points TP-01, TP-02, and TP-03. The results showed that the soil resistivity values were 65.97 Ω·m, 54.66 Ω·m, and 58.43 Ω·m, respectively. The rectifier output voltage was 3.1 V, 3.0 V, and 3.3 V, with a current of 0.3 A at each measurement point. Meanwhile, the PSP values were -1.162 V at TP-01, -1.102 V at TP-02, and -1.128 V at TP-03. The PSP values at all measurement points were more negative than -850 mV with respect to a Cu/CuSO₄ reference electrode, indicating that they met the cathodic protection criterion used in this study. Based on the soil resistivity, rectifier output, and PSP measurements, the ICCP system installed on the underground gas distribution pipeline at PT Perta-Samtan Gas Sei Gerong was considered capable of providing effective cathodic protection against corrosion. Keywords: Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP), underground gas pipeline, soil resistivity, rectifier, Pipe-to-Soil Potential.
