Abstract
The utilization of coconut shell ash as a partial cement replacement is an alternative approach to reducing cement consumption while increasing the utilization value of agricultural waste. This study aims to analyze the microstructural characteristics of concrete with various levels of coconut shell ash substitution using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The research was conducted descriptively through experimental analysis of SEM images, focusing on microstructural characteristics and utilizing compressive strength data as secondary data. Primary data were obtained through SEM observations of normal concrete and concrete with coconut shell ash substitutions of 1.25%, 2.5%, 3.75%, 5%, and 6.25%. Image analysis was performed using ImageJ and Origin software. The results showed that a 2.5% substitution of coconut shell ash produced the densest and most homogeneous concrete microstructure, characterized by lower porosity and fewer microcracks, as well as a more uniform particle distribution. Increasing the substitution level beyond 2.5% resulted in increased porosity and microcracks, leading to a decrease in matrix density. The 2.5% substitution level was identified as the optimum substitution level because it produced the best microstructural characteristics.
