Abstract

Paving blocks are widely used as construction materials for roads, sidewalks, and parking areas. However, the extensive use of cement in paving block production contributes to high carbon emissions and environmental concerns. One potential alternative to reduce cement consumption is the utilization of coconut shell ash (CSA) as a partial cement replacement. Due to its high silica (SiO₂) content and pozzolanic properties, coconut shell ash has the potential to improve the quality of paving blocks while promoting the utilization of agricultural waste. This study aimed to determine the effect of coconut shell ash as a partial replacement for cement on the compressive strength of paving blocks and to identify the optimum substitution percentage. An experimental method was employed using four levels of coconut shell ash substitution, namely 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% by weight of cement. The compressive strength test was conducted in accordance with the Indonesian National Standard (SNI 03-0691-1996). Based on the results of the research and data analysis, it can be concluded that the substitution of coconut shell ash (CSA) for cement affects the compressive strength of paving blocks. At the age of 7 days, the compressive strength values for CSA substitutions of 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% were 8.53 MPa, 7.84 MPa, 7.51 MPa, and 7.43 MPa, respectively. At the age of 14 days, the compressive strength increased to 13.48 MPa, 13.80 MPa, 12.05 MPa, and 9.82 MPa, respectively. At the age of 28 days, the compressive strength values reached 21.31 MPa, 22.79 MPa, 18.09 MPa, and 16.76 MPa, respectively. These results indicate that the compressive strength of the paving blocks tends to increase with increasing curing age, with a 5% CSA substitution identified as the optimum variation, producing the highest compressive strength of 22.79 MPa at 28 days. Based on SNI 03-0691-1996, the 0% and 5% CSA variations are classified as Quality B, while the 10% and 15% CSA variations are classified as Quality C. Therefore, all paving block variations investigated meet the compressive strength quality requirements specified in the standard.
