Abstract
Clay soil is a fine-grained soil characterized by high plasticity, low bearing capacity, and high sensitivity to changes in moisture content, making it unsuitable as a subgrade material without improvement. Therefore, soil stabilization is required to enhance its engineering properties. This study aims to analyze the effect of adding glass powder (SiO₂) and sodium chloride (NaCl) on the improvement of the unconfined compressive strength of clay soil, as well as to determine the optimum mixture that produces maximum strength. The research method was conducted through laboratory testing on clay soil samples obtained from Karang Raja Village, Muara Enim District, Muara Enim Regency. The variations of glass powder used were 1.5%, 2.5%, 3.5%, 4.5%, and 5.5%, with a constant addition of 4% sodium chloride. The tests carried out included physical properties tests (water content, specific gravity, sieve analysis, and Atterberg limits) and mechanical properties tests, namely compaction and unconfined compressive strength tests with curing periods of 0, 7, and 14 days. The results showed that the addition of glass powder and sodium chloride significantly increased the unconfined compressive strength of clay soil up to an optimum condition. The maximum unconfined compressive strength (qu) was obtained at a certain percentage of glass powder with a curing period of 7 days, indicating the highest strength improvement compared to untreated soil. Beyond the optimum content, the strength decreased, indicating the effective limit of the stabilizing materials. In addition, the mixture reduced the plasticity and increased the soil density, resulting in a more stable soil with improved bearing capacity. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the combination of glass powder and sodium chloride is effective as a stabilizing agent for clay soil, with an optimum mixture that produces maximum unconfined compressive strength.
