Abstract
Peat soil is an organic soil characterized by high water content and organic matter content, as well as low bearing capacity, requiring geotechnical investigation before being used as a foundation soil for construction. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the physical properties of peat soil and its shear strength based on the Triaxial Unconsolidated Undrained (UU) test conducted in the Mata Merah area, Palembang City. The tests included water content, specific gravity, bulk density, ash content, organic content, fiber content, and the Triaxial Unconsolidated Undrained (UU) test to determine the shear strength parameters, namely cohesion (c) and the internal friction angle (φ). The results showed that the soil at the study site was classified as sapric peat, with a water content ranging from 230.661–236.725%, specific gravity (Gs) of 1.550– 1.580, ash content of 24.370–29.977%, organic content of 70.023–75.630%, and fiber content of 14.938–17.607%. The Triaxial UU test produced cohesion (c) values ranging from 6.31–6.58 kg/cm² and internal friction angle (φ) values ranging from 2.50°–2.65°, indicating relatively low shear strength. Regression analysis revealed that specific gravity had the strongest correlation with cohesion (R² = 1.000), followed by fiber content (R² = 0.8865), water content (R² = 0.8840), ash content (R² = 0.8489), organic content (R² = 0.8489), and bulk density (R² = 0.4920). Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the physical properties of peat soil significantly influence the shear strength parameters obtained from the Triaxial UU test. The peat soil in the Mata Merah area is not suitable for direct use as foundation soil due to its low cohesion and internal friction angle. Therefore, soil improvement methods, such as soil stabilization, preloading, the installation of Prefabricated Vertical Drains (PVD), or the use of deep foundations, are recommended to improve the bearing capacity and stability of the soil.
