Abstract

The title of this research is The Effectiveness of Popular Songs to Increase Students’ Listening Skill at the Eighth Grade ofSMP Muhammadiyah 7 Palembang. The problem of this study is it effective to use popular songs in increasing students’ listening skill. The objective of this study was to find out whether it was effective or not to use popular songs in increasing students’ listening skill. This study applied a quasi-experimental method using a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The population of this study was all of the eighth-grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 7 Palembang, and the sample consisted of 25 students from one eighth-grade class selected through purposive sampling. The students were taught by using popular songs as the teaching medium during the treatment sessions. The songs were selected based on several criteria, including their popularity among teenagers, clear pronunciation, appropriate vocabulary level, and suitability for eighth-grade students. The data were collected through pre-test and post-test and analyzed using SPSS 25. The result of the paired sample t-test showed that there was a significant difference between students’ pre-test and post-test score. The (Sig. 2-tailed) was 0.000, which was lower than 0.05, meaning thatthe null hypothesis (Ho)was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. The mean score of the post-test experimental class was higher than the pre-test of experimental class, which indicates that the use of popular songs had a significant effect on students’ listening skill.In conclusion, the use of popular songs is effective in increasing students’ listening skill and can be used as an alternative teaching medium in English learning.
