Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore students’ perceptions of the challenges they face in understanding English reading texts. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The population of this study consists of SMA Muhammadiyah 5 Palembang. The sample was selected through purposive sampling based on students’ accessibility and willingness to participate. Data were collected through open-ended questionnaires to obtain in-depth information about students’ experiences and perceptions. The data were analyzed using qualitative descriptive analysis by categorizing the responses into relevant themes. The findings of this study reveal that students face several challenges in understanding English reading texts. The main difficulties include limited vocabulary, difficulty in understanding complex sentence structures, problems in identifying the main idea, and challenges in making inferences from the text. In addition, many students lack effective reading strategies, which makes the reading process less efficient. The results also showed that students believe the use of reading strategies such as skimming and scanning, as well as the use of digital tools like online dictionaries and reading platforms, can help improve their reading comprehension. It could be concluded that students perceive English reading as a challenging skill due to linguistic limitations and lack of reading strategies. However, these challenges can be reduced through the use of appropriate strategies and supportive learning tools, especially technology based resources.
