Abstract

Clay soil is a type of soil with low bearing capacity and high shrink-swell potential, which often causes problems in construction. One method to improve its properties is stabilization using additive materials. This study aims to investigate the effect of adding sugarcane bagasse ash (SBA) and coconut shell charcoal (CSC) on the physical and mechanical properties of clay soil, including consistency limits, density, and unconfined compressive strength (UCS). The mixture variations used were 0%, 17%, 20%, 23%, and 26% by weight of the soil. The tests were conducted at the Soil Mechanics Laboratory, Muhammadiyah University of Palembang, using the Standard Proctor and Unconfined Compression Test methods. The results showed that the addition of sugarcane bagasse ash and coconut shell charcoal improved the clay soil characteristics. The optimum mixture percentage was found at a certain variation that significantly increased density and unconfined compressive strength without excessively reducing plasticity. This study demonstrates that utilizing agricultural waste materials such as SBA and CSC can serve as an eco-friendly alternative for soil stabilization
