Abstract
Clay soil generally has low bearing capacity and high plasticity, making it sensitive to changes in moisture content. Therefore, stabilization is required to improve its physical and mechanical properties using alternative materials that are economical and environmentally friendly. This study aims to analyze the effect of adding rice husk ash (RHA) and lime on the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of clay soil using a quantitative experimental approach. The mixtures consist of 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% RHA with a constant lime content of 8%, and curing periods of 0, 5, and 10 days. The results indicate that the addition of RHA and lime improves the physical properties of the soil by reducing moisture content, liquid limit, plastic limit, and plasticity index, while increasing specific gravity and soil cohesion. The increase in strength is influenced by both the percentage of RHA and the curing time. The optimum condition was obtained at a mixture of 20% RHA and 8% lime with a curing period of 10 days, which produced the highest UCS value. This improvement is attributed to pozzolanic reactions between silica in RHA and calcium in lime, forming cementitious compounds that enhance the bonding between soil particles. Therefore, the use of RHA and lime is proven to be effective in stabilizing clay soil and has potential applications in construction, particularly for subgrade improvement.
