Abstract

Clay soil is a type of soil that has a very fine grain size, which is less than 0.002 mm. This soil is very plastic and has a low bearing capacity, so it is less suitable for use as a basic construction material, especially for buildings that require a high level of stability. In saturated conditions, clay soil experiences large volume changes, expanding when wet and shrinking when dry. Soil samples from Betung Barat Village, Abab District, Penukal Abab Lematang Ilir Regency were tested for physical properties, standard compaction, and unconfined compressive strength. In this study, clay soil was mixed using two types of additional materials, namely lime at 10% and red brick dust waste with variations of 2%, 4%, and 6% of the dry weight of the soil. Furthermore, it was cured for 7 and 14 days. A total of 40.620% of soil particles passed sieve No. 200 (0.075 mm) with a liquid limit (LL) value of 58.12% and a plasticity index (IP) of 12.32% indicating moderate plasticity. Based on the USCS classification system, the soil is classified as fine-grained clay (OH), while according to AASHTO it is categorized as group A-7-5 with moderate plasticity clay characteristics. The highest Qu value of 3.40633 kg/cm² was obtained in a mixture of native soil + 10% lime + 4% SBM with 14 days of curing, due to the improvement of soil structure through particle binding and void filling. In a mixture of 10% lime + 6% SBM, Qu decreased to 2.78844 kg/cm² because the mixture was less even and difficult to compact. Keywords: Clay, Lime, Red Brick Waste, Unconfined Compressive Strength.
