Abstract

The results of the learning needs analysis at SMAN 1 Sirah Pulau Padang, teachers use teaching materials in the form of textbooks by 78.64%, material that is considered difficult is biotechnology by 35.21% and that student prefer comic media by 44.6%. Learning motivation reviewed from the selection of tasks, effort and persistence in completing them shows the percentages of 55.5%, 64.2% and 82.5%, respectively. In addition, data from questionnaires filled out by teachers stated that the learning model frequently used is 42.4% applying the PBL model, competencies that have not been mastered by many students are critical thinking skills by 31.04. The purpose of the research on the development of PBL comic media integrated with ESSI is to increase students' motivation and critical thinking skills in biotechnology material. The research population of SMAN 1 Sirah Pulau Padang, students of class XII P1A and XII P1C. The research model used 4D referring to Thiagarajan, namely define, design, develop and disseminate. Data collection techniques were in the form of questionnaires and observation sheets. The define result is that teachers and students need biotechnology teaching media to help improve motivation and critical thinking skills. The design result creates critical thinking questions and PBL comic teaching media integrated with ESSI. The develop result of the development product assessment by material experts was 96.87% (very good), media experts 86.86% (very good), learning device experts 97.85% (very good), evaluation experts 89.23% (very good) and language experts 89.99% (very good). The disseminate result Ngain score of the experimental class learning motivation variable was 0.7427 (high) and the experimental class critical thinking variable was 0.6610 (moderate). To test the validity of the instrument, 7 questions were tested on grade XII 5 students, there was 1 question that was invalid because the calculated r value < r table. The results of the reliability test showed a Cronbach alpha value of 0.673 in the good category. The practicality level of ESSI integrated PBL comic media reached 92.50% (very practical), and the results of the student readability analysis were 80.38% (very strong). The results of this analysis indicate that the use of ESSI integrated PBL comic media is very valid, practical and effective for use by teachers and students to increase learning motivation and critical thinking skills.
