Abstract
Clay soil is a type of soil that has low bearing capacity and high plasticity, making it unsuitable for construction purposes without proper treatment. This study aims to determine the effect of adding palm shell ash (PSA) and gypsum on the stability of clay soil, particularly in terms of its unconfined compressive strength (UCS). The clay samples were taken from Lecah Village, Lubai Ulu District, Muara Enim Regency, and the tests were conducted at the Soil Mechanics Laboratory, Civil Engineering Department, Muhammadiyah University of Palembang. The mixture variations used were 0%, 3%, 9%, and 11% of palm shell ash and 4% gypsum with 3%, 7%, 9%, and 11% and 6% gypsum, with curing times of 0, 3, 7, and 14 days. The results showed that the addition of palm shell ash and gypsum significantly improved the soil stability. The Liquid Limit, Plastic Limit, and Plasticity Index decreased with increasing additive content, indicating better soil consistency and strength. The highest unconfined compressive strength was obtained at a mixture of 11% palm shell ash and 6% gypsum, yielding a UCS value of 6.51929 kg/cm² and a Cu value of 3.25964 kg/cm² after 7 days of curing. However, further increases in additive proportions resulted in a decline in strength. In conclusion, palm shell ash and gypsum can be used as alternative stabilizing agents for clay soil, with the optimum composition found at 7–11% palm shell ash and 6% gypsum. Future studies are recommended to explore higher gypsum variations for more comprehensive results.
