Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of variations in the Water Cement Ratio (W C 0.40 0.50 0.60) and fly ash substitution (0% 5% 10%) on the bulk density water absorption porosity and compressive strength of normal mortar at the age of 28 days. The mix design refers to ASTM C109 standards with a binder sand ratio of 1 2.75 and a total of 54 cube specimens measuring 50×50×50 mm. The results showed that a lower Water Cement Ratio increases compressive strength due to a denser and more compact mortar structure. Fly ash substitution of 5% to 10% reduces porosity and enhances compressive strength while excessive fly ash tends to decrease strength because of the reduction of active cement in the hydration reaction. The relationship between variables shows that bulk density is inversely proportional to water absorption and porosity and positively correlated with compressive strength. An appropriate Water Cement Ratio and optimal use of fly ash can improve mortar strength while supporting the use of environmentally friendly materials in the construction field
