Abstract

Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) is widely used as a binding material for concrete used in construction. Large-scale OPC production has caused pollution in the environment. Every year, millions of tons of cement produced worldwide have caused a significant increase in CO2 pollution in the environment. To address this issue, the use of industrial waste that has cementitious properties as an alternative material for concrete has become something interesting to study. One of them is through the use of green technology, which is more commonly known as geopolymers. Geopolymer mortar itself is an inorganic polymer material based on the content of alumina, silicate, and calcium. This study aims to investigate the effect of using pre-treatment fly ash as a substitute for cement on the compressive strength of geopolymer mortar, with geopolymer mortar that uses normal fly ash as a comparison, in order to utilize hazardous waste fly ash as a substitute for cement in environmentally friendly geopolymer mortar production. The test results of using pre-treatment fly ash and normal fly ash show that mortar using normal fly ash has a higher compressive strength than mortar using pre-treatment fly ash, where the highest compressive strength value for mortar using pre-treatment fly ash is 12.50 MPa achieved by the variation using 14 M NaOH at 28 days, while mortar using normal fly ash reaches its maximum point in the variation of 12 M NaOH with a compressive strength of 20 MPa at 28 days and experiences a decrease in the variation of 14 M NaOH by 12.83 MPa. Keywords: Geopolymer mortar, Molarity, NaOH, Na2SiO3, fly ash, alkali activator, compressive strength.
