Abstract

This thesis is entitled "Developing reading comprehension in the narrative text by using question answer (QARs) technique to the eight grade students Of SMP 44 Palembang." The problem of this study was "Is it effective to developed reading comprehension in the narrative text by using question answer relationship (QARS) technique to the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 44 Palembang ?" The objective of this study was to find out whether or not it is effective to develop reading comprehension in the narrative text by using question answer relationship (QARS) technique, This study used a quasi experimental design. The population of this study was all of eight grade students at SMP Negeri 44 Palembang with the same teacher in the academic year Of 2014-2015, with the total number of students were 204 students. The sample of this study was 68 students. The instruments used in collecting the data were the pre-test and post-test. Each test consisted of 20 items. The data was obtained from 20 multiple choice questions. The data were analyzed by using t-test. Based on the number of students who answered the items, the finding of pre-test indicated that the highest score was 70 and the lowest score was 30. After pre-test, the students were taught reading comprehension by using critical reading technique. The finding of post-test indicated that the highest score was 95 and the lowest score was 75. The mean score of pre-test was 47.50 and the mean of post-test was 83.09. Based on data analysis, the result of test showed that the value of t-obtained was 9.843 and t. table was 1.667. Since value Of I-obtained (9.843) was higher than t-table (l .667), so that the null hypothesis (110) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It means that developing reading comprehension by using critical reading technique to the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 44 Palembang was effective.
